Preventing pipe blockages: The 5 most common mistakes and how to avoid them

Anyone who has struggled with a stubborn blockage knows: prevention is much cheaper than fighting it. Nevertheless, hundreds of millions of euros are spent every year in German households on plumber visits and drain cleaners, which could be largely avoided with proper precautions.

Here are the five most common mistakes that lead to pipe blockages – and how to avoid them consistently.

Error 1: Pouring hot oil and fat down the drain

The largest and most frequent mistake. Liquid fat cools down in the pipe system and solidifies into hard layers on the pipe walls. Over the years, centimeter-thick deposits form – which exacerbate all other causes of clogging.

What to do: Dispose of old oil and fat in the residual waste or at local collection points. Wipe pans and pots with paper towels before washing them.

Damage control if it has already happened: For old fat deposits, biological treatment with Lipase-based cleaners – they enzymatically split the fat into fatty acids and glycerin and remove it permanently, instead of just displacing it.

Mistake 2: Disposing of food scraps in the sinks

What to do: Mechanically empty the sink before washing – dispose of residues in the organic waste bin or residual waste. A strainer over the drain costs €5 and catches 95% of the causes of clogging.

Mistake 3: Using chemical drain cleaners as a routine

Drano, Mr. Muscle and similar products are not designed for regular use. They dissolve fat in the short term but displace it deeper into the pipe system. With every use, the problem shifts further downstream – until eventually a plumber has to arrive with an auger.

Furthermore, strong alkalis or acids attack the pipe seals and can lead to leaks with repeated use.

What to do: Use chemical cleaners only in acute emergencies. For regular maintenance, switch to biological agents or simple hot water. A weekly flush with one liter of boiling water keeps fresh deposits in check.

Error 4: Not catching hair and soap residue in the bathroom

In the bathroom, it is not grease, but a combination of hair and soap residue that is the main problem. Hair forms networks that bind soap scale – the result is a tough, rubbery mass in the siphon and the pipe below.

What to do: Install a hair strainer over the shower drain and in the sink drain. Empty weekly. For solid soaps with a high fat content (olive soaps, some natural cosmetics), switch to liquid soaps – they leave less residue.

Error 5: Never cleaning the siphon

The siphon under sinks and washbasins collects almost everything that does not flow through. When it is full, water drains more slowly and the pressure pushes deposits into the subsequent pipes. Furthermore, the siphon itself becomes a source of odor if decay bacteria live there permanently.

What to do: Unscrew and clean the siphon at least every six months. It takes 10 minutes, costs nothing, and extends the lifespan of the underlying pipes by years.

A simple maintenance plan

Frequency Action
Daily Remove food scraps mechanically before washing up
Weekly Flush 1 liter of boiling water through kitchen and bathroom drains
Monthly Biological treatment (apply 50 ml to kitchen drain, leave overnight)
Semi-annually Unscrew and clean the siphon
Annually Have the main connection checked (in apartment buildings: riser pipes)

Realistically speaking, anyone who follows this routine will not face serious blockages even in 10 years. Emergency services will become the exception rather than the rule.
